CARP provides the following benefits:

Cancel or do nothing or if no settings are available for the type of monitor selected, the Display Settings dialog box appears, as shown in Figure 13-3. You can then manually choose the display settings.

CARP eliminates the duplication of cache contents across multiple ISA Server computers. The result is a faster response to queries and a more efficient use of server resources. Because CARP determines which ISA Server will cache any specific content, no traffic is required between ISA Server computers to determine which server is caching the content. CARP automatically adjusts when array members are added or removed. The hash-based routing means that when a server is either taken offline or added, only minimal reassignment of URL caches is required. CARP ensures that the cache objects are either distributed evenly between all servers in the array or by the load factor that you configure for each server.

The CARP process provides efficient routing for Web requests on the client side and on the server side. When client-side CARP is enabled, the Web browser downloads the Array.dll Get.Routing.Script from an ISA Server computer in the array. When a user types a URL into a Web browser, the URL is submitted to the script, which calculates which ISA Server in the array will be used to cache the content. The script always returns the same server list for a given URL, ensuring that each URL is cached on one array server only. The script generated by ISA Server implements the CARP algorithm. The script includes information about the configuration and current status of the array. By default, the script ensures that the URL space is distributed evenly across the available ISA Server computers. You can also configure a load factor for each array member that allows you to distribute the cache based on server configuration. ISA Server also enables server-side CARP for Web clients that do not use client-side CARP. In this situation, when a client sends a Web request to an array member, the server runs the CARP script with the requested URL and determines the array member that can best serve the request. The request is forwarded to that server.

NLB can be used to load-balance all types of network traffic going into the array. When clients connect to an NLB cluster, they use the shared IP address for the cluster. However, CARP cannot use the shared IP address because the client requests must be sent to a specific ISA Server. Because of this, CARP does not include the virtual IP address in the script sent to clients or when server-side requests are forwarded to other array members. Instead, CARP uses the specific IP address for the ISA Server computer.

Any time you want to change your display settings you can access the Display Settings dialog box, shown in Figure 13-3, by opening Control Panel, clicking Appearance And Personalization, clicking Personalization, and clicking Display Settings. You can also use this method to install external monitors that Windows Vista does not automatically detect or to install more than one external monitor. You manually configure an external monitor and extend your desktop onto it in the practice session later in this lesson.

Listing 7.11 is the opening of our skin class, ProcessSkin. (The second part of the source code is shown in listing 7.12.) The Progress class is effectively the model, and this class is the view in the classic MVC scheme. It subclasses javafx.scene.control. Skin, allowing it to be used as a skin. The properties at the top of the class are all exposed so that they can be altered by a stylesheet. They perform various stylistic functions.
