You can retrieve a reference to the application object at any time, at any point in your code, using the shared Application.Current property. Since Microsoft provides predefined policies, you may never have to manually create a policy, but it is the best way to become familiar with the available options. One other thing that should be noted is that policies are stored in the msdb database, so once you have created a new policy, you should make sure the msdb is backed up.
